Mr. Boykin was born in Sylvania, Screven County, GA, on February 27, 1916, the son of Judge Horace Arthur (H.A.) Boykin and Florence Marshall Boykin.

Following the death of his father in 1933, Mr. Boykin, who was then 17 years of age, with a mother and younger sister still at home, opened a grocery store in Sylvania which he ran successfully until he entered the military service at the outbreak of WWII. During the war, he served in both the United States Navy and the United States Army, completing his service as a drill sergeant for new recruits. Following his honorable discharge from the Army at the end of WWII, he and his wife, Mary Jane Gnann Boykin and their daughter, Barbara, moved from Sylvania to Tybee Island, where they lived until moving to Pooler in 1947.

He was employed at Union Camp Paper Company for over 25 years, while at the same time attending Armstrong College in the evenings studying business administration. Thereafter, he began a second career opening an independent insurance brokerage, Pooler Insurance Agency. Mr. Boykin continued operating Pooler Insurance Agency until his retirement at the age of 93.

Mr. Boykin and his wife Mary Jane, after her retirement as a teacher at Pooler Elementary School, renovated a historic home in Sylvania, which they maintained as a second residence. Mr. Boykin also built and maintained a home at South Forest Beach on Hilton Head Island, where they spent many happy summer weekends.

Mr. Boykin's life revolved entirely around family, work, and his various building and renovation projects. Mr. Boykin was also an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Savannah.
