Following his service in the Air Force, Walt moved to Dallas, Texas, to attend Christ for the Nations Institute. It was at CFNI that he saw from a distance, the woman who would one day be his wife, Katharine. It would not be for another year that they would meet again, and on their first meeting, during a worship service, he proposed marriage, and she accepted. Walt and Katharine would have celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on February 12, 2013.
Walt worked at Menasco Aerosystems in Fort Worth, Texas, for twenty-three years as a Mechanical Parts Inspector and later as an Internal Quality Auditor and Material Compliance Analyst Auditor for aircraft landing gear systems for commercial and military aircraft. From there, he worked for Bell Helicopter in Euless, Texas, as a Supplier Product Assurance Specialist performing quality assurance audits for government and private contractors throughout the nation. He was employed by Bell Helicopter until the time of death. He also pursued and achieved Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.
Walt served two terms as a Grand Prairie City Councilman, from 1990-1994.
Along with his wife, Katharine, he faithfully served in every church they attended. As a member of High Point Church, Arlington, Texas, for the last twelve years, he served as a home group leader.
Walt loved his family. His main enjoyment in life, his hobby, was his family. He lit up with a sweet smile when he was around his wife, children, and grandchildren. Some men have hobbies, but Walt received great joy from providing for and being with his family. He enjoyed the quiet simple things in life. His family will deeply miss him.
He leaves behind a godly legacy and heritage to his wife, children, and family, and his life bears testimony to the goodness and faithfulness of God. He would be the first to say, "to God be the glory! Hallelujah!"
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, Walt is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Katharine Sumlin Howey; daughter, Andrea Howey; son, Micah Howey and wife, Rebecca; son, Jeremy Howey; grandsons, Samuel and Stephen (all of Grand Prairie, Texas); father, William "Bill" D. Howey, Sr., of Independence, Missouri; brothers, William "Bill" D. Howey, Jr. and wife, Gail, of Naples, Florida; Edward "Butch" D. Howey, of Lee's Summit, Missouri; mother-in-law, Ruth Sumlin Lee, of Ruston, Louisiana; brothers-in law, Thomas Sumlin and wife, Becky, of Port Arthur, Texas; John Sumlin and wife, Karen, of Cumming, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
Walt was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Florence Edna Howey; father-in-law, Thomas Everett Sumlin, and sister-in-law, Sharon Howey.
