Jim farmed up until the time he was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. Following his stint in the army, Jim worked as a mechanic, tried farming once again and started his own business as a mechanic in Rossville.
In 1959, Jim and Mike moved to Postville, Iowa, and resided at 228 W. Murdock Street for forty-five years. During his time in Postville, Jim worked for the Ford Dealership and Cook's Shell Service Station as a mechanic. He later went to work at Allamakee - Clayton REC where he worked for eighteen years as a boom truck driver until his retirement. Following retirement Jim mowed lawn and blew snow for many people in the community.
He served on the Postville city council 1982-1984. He also served as mayor of Postville from 1984-1988.
