Marion Appling was born on May 26, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas to Otis and Hattie (Shaw) Appling. He attended school in Texas, later joining the United States Army where he served over twenty years and retired at the rank of Specialist First Class. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Smith in 1968 in Frederick, Oklahoma. After the military, he returned and was a barber for many years. He later went to work for the United States Postal Service and retired in 1987. He was a member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years, Finance Chairman, Sunday School Superintendent and President of the Brotherhood.
He is survived by two sons, Charles Appling of Lawton and Da Wayne Appling and his wife Tremia of Oklahoma City; nine daughters, Joyce Appling of Houston, Texas, Debra Cooper and her husband Randle of Oklahoma City, Terri King and her husband Alan of San Antonio, Texas, Carolyn Lindsay of Houston, Texas, Cathy Gossett and TiJuana Menefee and her husband Larry all of Wichita Falls, Texas, Marnita Archie and her husband Lathon and LaChelle McClellon all of Muskogee and Tara Brown and her husband Timothy of Brush, Colorado; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter, Amber Archie.
