Orson Desaix Munn Jr. Dies At 86
Orson Desaix Munn Jr., former Southampton Village Board Trustee, died at his home on Thursday, August 25. He was 86.
Serving on the Southampton Village Board of Trustees for 19 years, July 1967 to June 1986, Mr. Munn was responsible for the creation and funding of many of the parks that currently exist in the village.
He was born on January 22, 1925 in New York City to Orson Desaix Munn and Carrie Munn, and was the great-grandson of the first Orson Desaix Munn, who founded Scientific American magazine and its patent agency, Munn & Co., the company that was partially responsible for the rapid growth of the American patent system. In its peak years around 1860, one-third of all patents issued by the U.S. Patent Office were prosecuted by Munn & Co.
During World War II, Mr. Munn served as an executive officer on a torpedo boat in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1948, and from Fordham Law School.
Mr. Munn was married to Patricia Geoghegan Munn, on June 18, 1948, in New York City.
He founded Orson Munn & Company in 1983 and subsequently merged his firm with Bernhard Associates to create Munn, Bernhard & Associates in 1990.
He previously was chief investment officer of Madison Fund, Inc., president of Madison Advisors, president of Piedmont Advisory Corp. and vice chairman and chief investment officer of Lexington Management.
He began his investment career at Wood Walker & Company and eventually became chief executive officer and chairman of the executive committee.
During his lifetime, Mr. Munn was known as a great fisherman and one of the world's best shots for waterfowl and upland game.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Orson Desaix Munn III and Linda Munn; and four granddaughters, Sasha, Cara and Cameron Munn, and Caroline McConnaughey; and daughter-in-law, Christine Munn.
A private interment took place on Saturday, August 27, in Southampton. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
