James T. "Duke" Chandler III, 82, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 surrounded by his family.
He lived an exemplary life of selfless service to his family, friends and community and was an inspiration to all who knew him. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, music and the arts. Jimmie was a native Wilmingtonian.
He was proud of playing basketball for the AJAX that won the Del. State Championship in 1942. That same year, he graduated from P.S. Dupont High School. He attended Duke University where he played football and is past president of the Duke Alumni Assoc. of Wilmington. He also attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Jimmie was past president of the Wilmington Jaycees and was voted Young Man of the Year in 1957. He was active in his church, The Cathedral Church of St. John, where he served on the vestry. He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club, Lewes Yacht Club and Seaview Country Club.
Jimmie began working in the family business at a young age with his father and grandfather. He served numerous families in their time of need during his fifty years in funeral service. Under his leadership, the funeral home grew and expanded to include the suburbs. He was appointed by Gov. Terry to the Delaware State Board of Funeral Service in 1967. When he retired, Jimmie was the Chairman of the Board and President of Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory. He spent his retirement years fishing and relaxing with his family in Lewes, DE.
Jimmie is survived by his wife of 61 years Sally Heinzeroth Chandler; 4 sons, James T. Chandler, IV and his wife, Mary Jo, Bruce C. Chandler, Denis L. Chandler, Chad H. Chandler and his wife, Diane; one sister, April Mapes of Chagrin Falls, OH; and 2 brothers, Marvel Heinsohn of Denver, CO and Jay T. Chandler of Centreville, DE. He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren, Shannon, Melissa, Corey, Amanda, Drake, Bonnie, Anna, Tom, Kristen, Catheryn, Kelsey, Sara, Sarah and Alex and 4 great grandchildren, Chandler, Theodore, Audrey, and Edwin.
There will be a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Cathedral Church of St. John, 10 Concord Avenue, Wilmington on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Friends may call on Monday evening at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Sharpley from 6-8 pm. Burial will be private.
