Mary Ellen Bailey Succumbs Saturday, Funeral Held Sunday.

Funeral for Mary Ellen Bailey held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church was one of the largest ever held in Minden. Every seat on the main floor and in the balcony was filled, while many waited outside.
This plucky 17-year old Minden High School Senior, came back from an arm amputation to star in school activities but lost the fight Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the local hospital. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. E. A. Bailey.
Mary Ellen had served as head majorette of the Minden High School Band prior to her illness and had won several honors in state twirling competition.
Last summer a malignant growth on her arm forced an amputation. She survived the amputation and returned to enter school in September but became ill and was a patient in the Schumpert Sanitarium in Shreveport for some time before being brought home. She later entered the local hospital where she remained until her death Saturday. Her determination to continue activities despite her handicap drew widespread admiration.
The funeral Sunday afternoon was attended by many of her school mates and other friends. The band director Robert Grambling and members of the band were seated to the left of the pulpit. Pallbearers, who were also band members, were seated on the right. Behind them were seated high school students, teachers and Principal W. W. Williams. The front center section was reserved for the immediate family. Services were conducted by her pastor, Dr. Truman Aldredge.
After the church service the long procession made its way to the City Cemetery by way of the High School. Interment was under the direction of Green-Kleinegger Funeral Home.
Other than her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandmother, Mrs. B. L. Melton and her maternal grandfather, L. W. Pace, both of Marshall, Texas.=======

Mary Ellen Bailey was born 09/25/1937 - died 11/17/1954 with cancer. She was first buried in the Minden City Cemetery. After the death of Mr. Bailey her remains were transferred to the Gardens of Memory on the Lewisville Road in Minden, Row 7, Garden of Prayer to be reburied by her Father.
