Anna Elwell (Bridgman) Norton was born and raised in the Israel Bridgman homestead on North Road in Westhampton, Massachusetts. She was educated in the local schools. Shortly after their marriage, on October 8, 1840, she and her husband settled in Loudville, Mass., (a small village that straddles the town lines of Westhampton, Northampton and Easthampton), where they lived out their lives. Joseph was a woodworker by trade, building ladders, boxes, coffins, furniture, and occasionally houses. Of their nine children, four died in early childhood, two in early manhood, and three lived into old age, the youngest child living to be 100. Despite their hardships, the Nortons were an upright Christian family and faithful members of the Westhampton Congregational Church. Daughter Mary was postmistress in Loudville for several years.
