Rt. Rev. Msgr. ROWLAND E. GANNON was for many years the Rector of the New Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis on Lindell Blvd. A native of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in St. Louis Hills, Msgr. Gannon attended Kenrick Seminary and was ordained by Archbishop (later Cardinal) John J. Glennon in 1942.
After his ordination, Msgr. Gannon served in a number of parish associate positions prior to being named Pastor of the New Cathedral of St. Louis during the administration of John Cardinal Carberry, who also named him Archdiocesan Treasurer.
During Msgr. Gannon's tenure as Pastor of the New St. Louis Cathedral, he was instrumental in directing the completion of most of the acclaimed Byzantine-style mosaics within the ornate Cathedral interior, as well as finishing much of the installation of noteworthy interior fixtures stipulated for the architecturally-acclaimed structure, which features the largest mosaic display in North America executed largely by the Ravenna Mosaic Company of St. Louis. The New Cathedral Basilica was designed by the architectural firm of Barnett, Haynes and Barnett of St. Louis.
Msgr. Gannon was the first Archdiocesan priest to have a Master's degree in Economics from St. Louis University, which was beneficial to him in his duties as Archdiocesan Treasurer.
After his death on St. Patrick's Day (March 17),2002,he received a concelebrated Funeral Mass at the New Cathedral presided over by (then) Archbishop Justin F. Rigali. Msgr. Gannon was buried on the Archdiocesan Priests' Lot at Calvary Cemetery.
