Son of John Sanders and Mary Milburn of Alston, Cumberland, England. Emigrated to USA with father and stepmother Margaret Bentley on 21 September 1841 aboard Mormon emigrant ship Tyrian. He is referred to in step-uncle Richard Bentley's account of the party's overland journey to Nauvoo as "Bro. Sanders's brother" - i.e. John Sanders' brother, but was in fact Sanders' son, as DNA links to descendants of Mary Gibson (nee Milburn) now also confirm.
