The Norwegian consul in Portland, Lorentz A. Bruun, died Monday of heart disease at age 68.
The Oslo-born Portland contractor – holder of Norway's highest honor, the Order of St. Olaf's -- was dean of Portland's 24-nation consular corps in 1970. At the time of his death, he was on the board of directors of Oregon Pioneer Savings & Loan Association and the board of regents of the University of Portland.
Coming to the United States in 1921, Mr. Bruun became a citizen in 1927 and came to Portland soon after graduating from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 1932. In 1946, he founded the Lorentz Bruun Construction Co.
He was appointed Royal Norwegian consul in Portland in 1953, and was named Scandinavian Man of the Year in 1968 by the Portland Scandinavian Men's Club. The king of Norway bestowed on him the Order of St. Olaf's in 1960. He lived at 3263 SE Steele St.
Mr. Bruun is survived by his wife Helen K.; sons Larry K. and Kelly C., both of Portland; brother Egil Ekko of Italy and seven grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilhelm Funeral Home. Vault entombment will be private.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Norse Hall Restoration Fund or the Heart Fund.
