It is said that after his arrival in Utah, he settled first in Holladay and then moved to Draper where he made his permanent home. Here he held many positions of trust both in civic and religious affairs. His was a hospitable home and many youths were befriended by this fine man.

George Bankhead, a Southern gentleman and gentle speaking man settled in Draper in 1852. His nephew stayed in Draper and went to school. His wife died at the birth of a baby.
a number of the older settlers say that he did not have a wife when he lived there. He came with 5 slaves. Three of them are named, Nancy, Sam and Alex.

George W. Bankhead received 160 acres from the United States of America on March 10,1870. Mr. Bankhead sold 92.87 acres to Issac M. Stewart on May 8, 1874, for $120.75.

According to family records George adopted Chris Sorenson and schooled him giving him a good education and property. He became a special bookkeeper and he married a Crossgrove girl.

Suggested edit: Almost everything on the Find a Grave entry for George Washington Bankhead is incorrect. Sarah Jane Swinden is not the mother of the children of George Washington Bankhead' children. She was his 2nd wife. He had a first wife named Jane (last name unknown). They are on the 1850 Utah Census with their 3 children, James, aged 5, Samuel aged 2 and Jane age 1 month. By 1860 George Washington Bankhead's wife Jane and their 3 children are not with him. It is not known what happened to them but no record can be found of them dying in Utah. The wife may have taken them and left.

The two boys, Samuel and Walter listed as his sons on the Find a Grave entry for George Washington Bankhead are actually black slaves who were brought to Utah by the Bankhead brothers, George Washington and John Henderson. They definitely are not the sons of George Washington Bankhead and Sarah Jane Swinden. Sarah Jane Swinden was born in 1833 in England and came to Utah in 1861. They were married probably 1862 or early 1863. She died in childbirth on December 4, 1863. If Sarah Jane Swinden was born in 1833 in England and came to Utah in 1861,how could she be the mother of Walter and Samuel born in 1846 and 1844? I also have a copy of her immigration papers.

I have copies of the death records for Walter Bankhead born 1846 and Samuel Bankhead born 1844 and both records state that they were colored or black.

Whoever gave this information for this grave memorial, did not do any research into this family and it is hoped that the corrections can be made so as not to pass along this obviously incorrect information any further.

Whoever is in charge of memorial page may want to contact and I can furnish them with the correct information on this family.

Thank you.
