Sydney O. Roberts was born in Rutland County, Vermont to Gilbert and Maria Dyer Roberts on April 20,1842. At the age of 10 he moved with his parents to Will County, Illinois where they lived until 1868. In 1861 he enlisted in the 9th Illinois Cavalry. He was in engagements at Nashville, Franklin and Tupelo as well as others. At the end of the war he rmained in the south as a buyer of cotton for the next 2 years. Upon his return he purchased 320 acres 2 miles south of Thawville. In June of 1872 he married Martha Ramsey of Piper City. To their two children were born Jay and Kay.
