Charlotte Tucker entered the Navy Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) in 1942. She was sent to Hunter College, Bronx, New York for boot camp. From there she was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Center/Hospital in Illinois. Rank was pharmacist's mate. Discharged 12/7/1945. Salary was about $21 per month.
Charlotte met William J. Hudson through her sister, Rosmae, who worked with him at Bowser's in Fort Wayne, IN. Rosmae wrote to Bill after he began serving in WWII and fixed them up later on. They were married 12/24/1947 and moved to Spencerville, IN, Bill's home town. They had six kids.
Charlotte was stricken with polio when she was about 27 years old, soon after the birth of her daughter, Peggy Ann. Though she survived, her health was significantly affected by polio for the rest of her life, including lack of muscle tone, respiratory problems and severe muscle cramping. Her hands were so weak that doctors operated on the left hand to remove the tendon from the fourth finger and placed it into the index finger of her right, dominant, hand, in order to allow her to grasp.
Charlotte became Postmaster at Spencerville and retired in about 1986, soon thereafter she moved to Witmer Lake, Wolcottville, IN where she lived until 1993.
Charlotte moved to Auburn as she aged to be nearer family. She lived in her own apartment and continued to drive and be active until her failing health necessitated a move to assisted living (7515 Winchester Road) until she died on 10/18/2001. She was laid to rest at White City Cemetery, Spencerville, IN next to Bill.
