Coopersville Observer, March 20, 1891--Died on the 12th inst., Mr. James Wheeler, a pioneer, at the age of 71 years. He came to this township when a young man and settled on the farm on which he has since resided. He was a soldier during the Civil War and did good service for his county. He was a member of Randall Post G. A. R., also a member of Tallmadge Grange where he was much respected for the good qualities and heart which he manifested. James H. Wheeler was born in New York state July 27, 1820, the son of Moses and Lucy Wheeler, both of whom died when James was small. At the age of twenty-two he moved from New York to Michigan and taught three terms of school in the city of Jackson. The lady who became the wife of Mr. Wheeler bore the maiden name of Elizabeth McKee.

During the late war his sympathies were on the side of the Union and he enlisted in the army in 1861, serving valiently until the close of the conflict, when he was honoraably discharged.

Military Records--James Wheeler enlisted in Co. D, 1st MI Engineers, as private, on September 25, 1861, age 41. Received a disability discharge from Co. D, 1st MI Engineers, on January 21, 1863. Enlisted in Co. K, 1st Engineers Regiment, on December 21, 1863, and mustered out on September 22, 1865, at Nashville, TN.
