A native of Jamestown, he was born Dec. 22, 1904, a son of Otto and Betty Frithiof Martenson.
In early years, he was employed by the former Jamestown Lounge Co. In 1941, he purchased Harry's Lunch in Brooklyn Square, retiring in 1968. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, Thule Lodge and was inducted in the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. He played baseball for the Triangles in 1929, and the Jamestown Chair Team, where he was outstanding pitcher. In 1964, he founded the Jamestown and Area Oldtimers Baseball Team, where he served as secretary-treasurer for many years, was active in fund-raising and worked tirelessly for the organization.
In retirement, Mr. Martenson enjoyed helping his children with home improvement projects and each of them are very proud of his beautiful work. He was very close to his children and cherished his grandchildren and loved spending time with each of them. He was a family oriented man and kept his restaurant closed on Sunday so he could spend time with family.
He is survived by two sons: Gene H. Martenson of Swarthmore, Pa., and Dr. Bruce D. Martenson of Lakewood; a daughter, Sheila M. Brinkley of Lakewood; nine grandchildren: Christine A. Martenson of Norwalk, Conn., Susan Martenson Farese of Florence, Italy, Sharon Martenson Hoehn of Stamford, Conn., Bruce Gregory Martenson of Phoenix, Jennifer Powell of Fabius, N.Y., Lisa Martenson Pauwels of Philadelphia, Karin Martenson Goldberg of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Michael L. and John P. Brinkley, both of Jamestown; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Tekla Anderson Martenson, whom he married June 8, 1926, and who died Oct. 14, 1996; a granddaughter, Karen Lynn Martenson, in 1956; three sisters: Olga Erlandson, in 1945, Svea Martin, in 1984, and Eva Wennberg, in 1995; and a brother, Arthur L. Martenson, in 1971.
