Waiter Wounded By Unknown as He Defends Wife
Homer Walters, 27, in Critical Condition at Hospital After Shooting

Homer Walters, 27, of the Lee Hotel was shot in the left groin at 12:45am Tuesday by a man who escaped in an automobile. The victim was taken to St Paul's Hospital in critical condition.

Walters' wife, proprietor of the hotel, was asked an insulting question by a man who appeared at the second story place in the 1900 block of Live Oak, near Harwood. When she resented it the man started cursing her. She told him to leave and he slapped her, Mrs. Walters said.

Walters came from a room near the stairhead and told the stranger to leave. The man turned on him and started cursing, seized Walters and hit him twice with his fist. He pulled a gun and hit Walters behind the ear, cutting his scalp. Walters tried to strike back, and the man fired one shot.

The stranger then ran down the stairs to an automobile in which another man was sitting and the two escaped, driving east on Live Oak. A man on the sidewalk near the stair entrance took the car number and gave it to police.
