Jesse was also called "Jesse one eye" because he had the use of only one eye.It was also used to distinguish him from the two other Jesse' in the area.

On April 6 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Opelousas. He was assigned to Company A, 28 regiment, Louisiana Infantry as a private. His regiment was sent to Vicksburg,Ms. and fought during the seige of the city. On July 4 1863, after the surrender of Vicksburg, He was paroled and sent home.

He married Marie Reed(d/o Samuel Reed,Jr. & Isabelle Fontenot) in 1866. They made their home in the Berwick Community.
