Marcellus, son of Smith Mosher & Keziah Pearsall, married 1st tiem to Ruth Meigs 16 Sep 1867, married 2nd time to Mary E Unknown. ***** Marcellus was in the US Army in 1863.

He grew up in the Cayuga County farming community of Venice. At the age of 22, Marcellus signed his name to the enlistment rolls on July 23, 1862. Less than a month later he was mustered in as the 1st Sergeant of Company I of the 111th New York Infantry. As the top enlisted man of his company, Marcellus was present at all the seminal events of the regiment in 1862 and 1863. Records as to why are scarce, but Marcellus was returned to the rank of Private by November 1863.

During the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, Marcellus was one of many casualties suffered as the 111th attempted to bolster the skirmish line in front of the Brock Road. He was later promoted to Corporal in December of that same year and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant less than a week before the surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.

Back home in Venice, Marcellus took up lodgings with his older brother Nelson and his family. That same year, Marcellus married a woman named Mary. It is unclear how that union ended, or if it did, but by 1867, Marcellus was living in Peoria, Illinois, and had wed Ruth Ann Meigs. Over the years, the couple would be blessed with six children. Marcellus spent the rest of his life in southern Illinois working as a teacher. He passed away on November 4, 1902 at the age of 62 and was laid to rest in the Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.
