Mary Ellen was one of eight children born to Patrick Neary and Mary Quinn. Mary Ellen was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware with her sisters...Catherine, Ann, Elizabeth and Gertrude and her brother, John Francis Neary. She also had a sister, Helen who died in infancy.

Mary Ellen married Michael Donohue on the first of October in 1902. Their union would produce three children, Thomas M. Donohue, Mark Neary Donohue and Elizabeth Gabriel Donohue. Mary Ellen's first husband, Michael would die of TB on November 27, 1907. With three small children to care for, Mary Ellen started working for the neighbor next door as a caretaker for his mother in law. She fell in love with Mr. Gibney, and they were married on November 9, 1911. Two more children would come out of this union, Robert B Gibney and John F Gibney whom they called Jack. Mary Ellen would also become the step mother to John's three children from his previous marriage, Frederick James, Louise Garland, and Elizabeth A.

Mary Ellen would live in Wilmington, Delaware until her death in 1954.
