Montie Loretta Gass, 68, of Craft Springs East, Afton, died Thursday evening at the home of her daughter on the Newport Highway after what her family said was "a courageous battle with cancer."

She was employed by MECO for 26 years. Miss Gass was a member of Mount Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was chosen Miss Greene County in 1957.

Survivors included three daughters and two sons-in-law: Tammy and Randy Johnson of Greeneville, and Janet and Mike Cutshall and Jamey Sizemore, all of the Cross Anchor community; three special granddaughters: Andrea Dean, Michelle Johnson, and Jacey Sizemore; her special aunts and uncles: Glennon and Jan Brown, and Elmer "Buster" Brown, all of Greeneville, and Rosemary and Alex Dunn of the Cross Anchor community; several special cousins; a special friend since childhood whom she considered a sister: Pat Garber; and other special friends: Neppie Beach, Frances Dunbar, and Betty Lou McAmis.

She was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Lola Gammons Brown and was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Gass.

The Rev. T.J. Malinoski and Wade McAmis will officiate.

A committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cross Anchor Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Weems, Todd Brown, Randy Dunn, Lanny Dunn, Mike Dean, Randy Dean, Gale Doty and Bill Dean.
