Ira Stuckey was born near Florence, MS , Rankin County to Carl and M.Florence Laird Stuckey . The family lived in the home established by his mother's parents, Erastus H and Elizabeth Berry Laird. indeed, he told me that he remembered " slipping around underneath the porch " listening to his grandfather talk about the Civil War.
He was a member of the 1927 Florence High School basketball team that placed third in the nation after a tournament in Chicago. He and his teammates with cheerleaders were recognized at The Colisuem in Jackson in 1977, when , exactly 50 years later , Florence High again won the state championship in basketball.

He married the former Margaret White of Clearbranch in 1929

He graduated with a degree in engineering from Mississippi State University in 1933

He was in the reserves when Pearl Harbor was bombed and served as a Major in New Guinea during WW 2., having shipped out on the Queen Mary.He eventually attained the rank of Colonel.

He had two children, Faye Stuckey Edwards and Ira Joe Stuckey.
He lived in the Florence community and worked for Mississippi Power Company until his retirement around 1972.

He seemed to me , as his grandson, a man devoid of fault -- he never smoked or drank, never cursed, was o incredibly even temperament
