He was the grandson of Robert, Sr. and Elizabeth Hester "Hetty" (Riney) Edelen and Francis and Aletha (Spalding) Simms. For some reason his baptism is not recorded at St. Rose Church, near Springfield, Kentucky.
His burial entry is on page 792 of St. Rose Sacramental register III. It says he was nine years of age and was buried May 3, 1863.
