CENTERVILLE
Mrs Edwin C Lockwood

It is not often that our village is called upon to part with one of such character and setting as in the death of Mrs Lockwood.
Born in Centerville in one of our old-time homes, under the shadow of the village church, daughter of Captain Philander and Mrs Julia (Smith) Crosby, she grew up one of our best and brightest girls.
Mentally keen and alert, with quick wit to discern character in its different phases, she was always interesting and popular in social circles.
Living intimately many years with her sister,Mrs Melissa Hamblin, they seemed to their friends like twin sisters, which intensified the loss to the latter.
In June 1891, she was married to Mr Edwin C Lockwood,a Grand Army Veteran and for many years connected to the Foreign Mails Department of the Boston postoffice. They lived many years in Dorchester and while there she united with the Pilgrim Congregational Church, where she was much interested in its work.
She spent her latter years during the Summers with Mrs Hamblin in her home on Monument Avenue, this village, and was much interested in church work, giving freely of her time and strength to everything pertaining to the Ladies' Sewing Circle and the church fair, where she will be especially missed.
The ties that bound her to the old village home were never loosened.
The sympathy of the village goes out to her husband;to her sisters, Mrs Mary Morris and Mrs Hamblin ; and to her brother Mr Alonzo P Crosby.
Burial was in the Crosby family lot in Beechwood cemetery.Services were conducted by the pastor of Pilgrin Congregational Church,Dorchester, Rev Edward D Gaylord and Rev Thomas Lutman of this village, both of whom gave fine expression to the high estimate of her Christian character.A profusion of flowers fittingly expressed the esteem of relatives and friends.
Among those present from out of town were Col John S Lockwood, of Brookline, Mrs Mary S Morris, Mrs Joseph P Phinney,Mrs Thomas C Hovey, and Mrs Fred Lunt of West Medford;Mr and Mrs Horace C Hartshorn,Watertown;Mr and Mrs Stacy L Hall, and Mrs Irene Foster of Dorchester.
The pallbearers were Stacy L Hall,Horace C hartshorn,Lawrence S Crosby,Howard Marston.
