He was a practicing lawyer for many years, admitted to the bar in 1874, later becoming a judge. Quite the colorful character, he was noted for disappearing on occasion, which didn't normally disturb his family. Then in 1904 he vanished, letters started arriving to his son, Gilbert, that he was kidnapped and being held for ransom. This raised a bit of alarm, mostly because this had happened before...typically when he was running into financial trouble. This time, though, it made the papers, published widely in NY at the time. Judgments were made against him in the sum of $991, regardless of being "kidnapped", shortly after which time he reappeared.

He was also a veteran of the Civil War, serving with Co. D. 110th Infantry, but being discharged early due to ill health.
