Civil War: Company G, 1st California Infantry,
and Company B, 1st California Veteran Infantry

William Lewis LaRose (also La Rose) was born at Weston, Platte County, Missouri, in 1842, the son of Samuel Shearer LaRose* and Sarah Jane Lewis (1825, MO-btwn 1861-79, CA). His parents moved to California about 1858 and settled in Butte County. In 1860 William appears as an 18-year-old single printer living in San Jose, whereas his parents, brother William (sic, George), 14, and sister Sarah, 11, were living in Butte County (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private at Nevada City August 10, 1861, and was mustered into Company G, 1st California Infantry, August 19. Private LaRose marched with the California Column to Arizona and New Mexico, where he re-enlisted January 31, 1864. He was transferred to Company B, 1st California Veteran Infantry, August 31, 1864. Private LaRose was mustered out at Los Pinos, New Mexico, September 20, 1866. He returned to California where he settled at San Francisco and married Hannah B. (maiden name unknown). William was one of the moving forces behind the organization of the Grand Lodge (No. 1), Knights of Pythias, at San Francisco, where he was initiated in 1869. Later that same year he helped organize Lodge No. 5 (subsequently renamed Ivanhoe), also in San Francisco. He moved to Monterey in the mid 1870's to become editor of the Californian. After being diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1879, he went to Oakland shortly before he died (Santa Cruz Weekly Sentinel, Vol. 25, No. 3, June 21, 1879; 3:1. Sacramento Daily Union, Vol. 10, No. 118, Jan. 7, 1880; 2:1). Ten years after his death Hanna filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Oakland September 6, 1890, and received application No. 470,112 and certificate No. 300,767. Hannah eventually moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she was active in the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. No children were found for this marriage.

*Samuel Shearer LaRose filed for a homestead in Huntington County, Indiana, June 5, 1837 (Township 26N-Range 9E-Section 15), but had moved to Platte County, Missouri, by 1842. He had moved his family to California by 1860 and appears as a resident of Butte County in the 1860 US Census. Samuel was a widower by 1880.
