HAMPTON - Furman "Butch" Baker, 75, of Hampton, passed away on June 26, 1998, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Baker was born and raised in Henderson, N.C., but moved to Hampton in 1960. He was a retired meat cutter.
An active member of Newmarket Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and in the Baptist Brotherhood, but he is best known for his work in Alcoholics Anonymous.
He devoted most of his spare time helping others and himself reach sobriety. He would have obtained 27 years of sobriety in August of this year.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Baker; stepson and daughter-in-law, Bob and Georgia Hunter; two granddaughters, Marsha Gray and Susan Engler; two grandsons-in-law, Jeff Gray and John Engler; and one great-grandson, John Robert Engler, all of Hampton/Newport News; two brothers, Benny Baker of Portsmouth and Charles Baker of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one sister, Kathleen Shearin of Henderson, N.C.
Memorials may be made in the form of flowers, or by donation to the AA meeting held on Sundays at 6 p.m. at Wythe Presbyterian Church in Hampton.
