She was born in Central Point Nebraska. After the death of her father when she was three, she moved with her mother and sister Bonnie to Oregon to start a new life. Shirley graduated in 1945 from Girls Polytechnic High School in Portland. After school, she worked at Jantzen Knitting Mills and there she met her future husband Bob O. They married on March 21, 1947 and were together for 45 years until Bob's death. They had two sons, Gary and Bruce, and helped raise five foster children. For Oma, as family and closest friends called her, family was very important and she had a tradition of spending Friday nights out with her sister and nieces. She took great pleasure in being with family and was very proud of her sons and grand children. Shirley "Oma" was very social and enjoyed bowling, bingo, bunko, pinochle, and trips with the Elkettes. For 15 years, she was an Avon representative. She enjoyed traveling and cruises. She went to Mexico, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia, and many other countries. She continued to travel until her health failed. Shirley did not know a stranger - everyone was a friend to her. She was still close to school friends from the first grade. Survivors include sons Gary and Bruce, daughter Annie, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her husband, and a twin son and daughter preceded her in death.
