William H. Russell was born in Belmont county, Ohio, May 31, 1833 and died at his home in Henderson county, Ill., six miles west of Little York, Friday evening at seven o'-clock, September 8, 1905. When twenty years of age he came to Illinois and settled in Henderson county. With the exception of eight months in the service of the Union, and nine years spent in Iowa, he has made his home since he first came to Illinois, in Henderson county. He enlisted in Co. K., 84th Infantry Volunteers, but on account of poor health he could not stay in the service long. Mustered out of service in March 1863, he returned home. September 15, 1864, he was united in marriage to Ann R. Hartley. To this union eleven children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Robert Sherman, Mary Ann and Joseph A. The others, Jennie M. Campbell, Fannie M. Carpenter, of Des Moines, Iowa; Harry T., of Abingdon, Ill.; Charles C., Lottie B. Darrah, Will C. Minne M. Fair, and George A., with his devoted wife live to mourn his loss. He has two living brothers, Charles, of Columbia, Iowa, and Wesley, of Rozetta. Ill. Of his life but little need be said. He was converted when 22 years of age and united with the Baptist church of Rozetta, Ill. Some years later he transferred his membership to the Methodist church and has served faithfully in it until his recent illness kept him away from services.
The funeral services were held on Sunday at 1 o'clock at the Fall Creek M. E. church, conducted by Rev. E. C. Anderson, of Geneseo, Ill., assisted by , Rev. Chas Fitz-Henry, of Oquawka. A large concourse of friends came to pay their last respects. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was made in the Fall Creek cemetery. The pall bearers were his Sunday School class: Harry Bird. Richard Garwood, Allan Campbell, James Balmer, Harry Moody and Joseph Campbell.
