H. A. Saathoff Dies at Fairbury

Hio Albert Saathoff passed away at his home in Fairbury on Sunday morning, July 20, at 5:10 o'clock, death being due to the debilities of old age, he having attained the age of 78 years, 8 months, 18 days. Mr Saathoff is well known in the vicinity of Anchor where he lived until about 5 years ago when the family moved to Fairbury.

Mr Saathoff was born in Catharinenfeld, Aurich, Germany, Nov. 2, 1845*, being the son of Albert E. and Maria (Warners) Saathoff. In 1855 he came to America with his parents who settled in Woodford Co. On Mar. 3, 1869 he was united in marriage with Miss Phebe Franks, who together with the following children is left to mourn his loss: Mrs Lena Schlicher, Avoca, Mrs Mary Helmers and Mrs Ebena Wills, Sibley Iowa; Albert H. of Pontiac; Mrs Fannie Hadaway, Colfax; Mrs Jessie Harms, Forrest; George, Fairbury. One daughter, Mrs Maggie Jacobs preceded her father in death. Besides immediate family, one brother in Burbank, Calif., 43 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren survive.

Previous to his 22 years residence in this vicinity, Mr Saathoff had also spent a number of years in Kansas. On coming back to Illinois the family located on a farm N.W. of Fairbury. He retired from the farm 5 years ago and moved into town.

Mr Saathoff was a gentleman who was loved and respected in the home and held in high esteem as a neighbor and a friend. He led a consistent Christian life. He was baptized on Mar. 26, 1866, being a member of the Lutheran church.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Fairbury, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon on July 22 and were largely attended . Rev F. A. Bunge pastor of the LUtheran church of Chenoa had charge of the service in English and Rev A. Hahn, and old time friend of the deceased in Anchor, spoke in German. The Chenoa choir sang three selections. Interment at Rook's Creek.

Baptismal records from St Peter Lutheran show he and his wife, Wubke/Phoebe, had a daughter who they named Ubbina Gesina Saathoff. She was born 4 January 1881.
