John Bigge was born in England, about 1560, probably in Cranbrook, Kent. He was the son of James and Ann Bigge. Like many others in his family, he was a cloth merchant. He married Rachel Martin at St. Mildred's Church in Tenterden, Kent on September 14, 1583. She was the daughter of James Martin and Joan Adam, baptised at Lydd, Kent on June 17, 1565. They were the parents of eleven children, Anna, Smallhope, Patience Foster, Elizabeth STOWE, James, Rachel Starr Masters, Anna, John, Mary, John again and Thankful. John was quite prosperous. He made his will on August 11, 1605, and it was proved on October 20 of the same year. In his will, he named five unmarried daughters under 20, his wife, and sons Smallhope and John, who was unmarried and under 21. John was buried, as a householder, in the churchyard of St. Dunstan's Church at Cranbrook on August 13, 1605.

Through Mary (Bigg?) Betts, apparently sister of her husband, Rachel (Martin) Bigg was aunt (by marriage) of Thomas Betts of Guilford.
