When Nels C "Sonny" Johnson was born on November 2, 1902, in Pacific Junction, Iowa, his father, Nels, was 34 and his mother, Annie, was 30. He had one brother and three sisters. He died as a child on November 28, 1906, in Iowa, and was buried in Neola, Iowa.

Sonny, while at Grandparents Maren and Niels Larsen's house in 1906, Sonny got very sick, possibly drank something, they left for home, vomiting and died later at home. Parents wouldn't talk about it.
Sonny died the day before America's celebrated Thanksgiving day in 1906.
