John William Shaw was born in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, to James R. Shaw and Mary Boone Beard Shaw. His family later homesteaded in Nebraska, where they built a sod hut on the prairie. He tried out life as a cowboy in Nebraska, but then returned to Olmsted Falls where he married Welthy May Hall. He found work on the Great Northern Railroad as an engineer and the family moved to Minot, North Dakota, where daughter Marion and the twins, Eugene and Genevieve, were born.
