Sent from Ohio by the Presbytery to serve as minister to the United Presbyterian congregation at Clayton, Adams county, Illinois in 1846. He accepted the call to the pulpit from Randolph county, Illinois in 1849. He is shown in Randolph county in the 1850 US census, with his first wife, Agnes Rebecca Lang, and daughter Ann M. Brown, listed as born about 1849 in Ohio.

Served as President of Lincoln College, Greenwood, Missouri during the 1870's and 1880's, with 6 instructors and 37 students reported in 1878. The 1880 US Census shows Rev. Brown with his second wife, Sarah McMichael, and their son Montrose, who was born in Pennsylvania about 1871.

In 1879, Rev. Brown served 6 months as minister to the United Presbyterian Church of Hiawatha, Brown county, Kansas for 6 months. This church was established by Rev. Marion Morrison in October 1876.

Rev. Brown also served various terms as a member of the Monmouth College Senate. As of 1884, Monmouth College records list his residence as Greenwood, Missouri.

The 1900 US census shows Rev. Mitchell M. Brown, retired, with wife Sarah McMichael Brown, living in Golden, Adams county, Illinois (not far from Clayton). He listed that his father was born in South Carolina, and his mother in Kentucky. They are listed as married for 30 years, with Sarah listed as being the mother of 1 child, who was living elsewhere. Son Montrose was living nearby in Adams county, Illinois.

Buried adjacent to Rev. Nathan Harvey Brown (1834-1912), presumably the sons of Nathan and Elizabeth Mitchell Brown, who are also buried nearby in Monmouth cemetery. Date of burial was 9 October 1909.
