Son Landers, Age About 34, Shot in Head With Shotgun
Logan Franklin, Father of the Murder in Jail
Son Landers, 34, son of Bev Landers, of the Shelton Laurel section was instantly killed Thursday evening when he was shot from ambush near his home. The charge entered the right side of his head, behind the right ear and ranged upward. It was fired from a thicket beside the road where Landers and his father-in-law, Logan Franklin, were quarreling. Following the shooting, a shotgun shell was found and a walking-stick, said to have belonged to Lola Franklin, 31, son of Logan Franklin.
Sheriff C.M. Burnette learned Friday morning that Lola Franklin and Landers, had already had trouble over a steel trap belonging to Franklin, which Landers had alleged to have thrown away. Witnesses said that Lola Franklin was seen to leave the home of Wayne Franklin, and circle the group composed of Wayne Franklin, son of Logan Franklin, Mrs. Son Franklin and Eleson Landers, step-son of Son Landers, as well as the two men who were quarreling. Lola Franklin crossed the road and disappeared into the underbrush.
At the actual time of the shooting witnesses say that Logan Franklin was advancing on Landers with a drawn knife and Landers was trying to hold him off with a 22 rifle. The shot from beside the road was fired about 30 feet from where Landers was standing. No one saw the man who fired the shot.
Following an inquest held by M.H. Tweed, magistrate of that section, Logan Franklin was brought to Marshall by deputy sheriffs Elmer Tweed and Hubert Worley and placed in Jail here. Sheriff C.M. Burnette visited the scene Friday morning and ordered a search to be made for Lola Franklin, and at this time he has not been found by the officers.
Funeral arrangements had not been made for Landers Friday morning. He is survived by his widow and her child, five sisters and the following brothers: Sampson, Roland, Dempsey, Milton, George, Arnold and Luke.
