Vernie Allen Buried Tuesday

Vernie Edward Allen, fourth child of Wm. Sherman and Millie Elizabeth Allen, was born on August 24, 1902 in a sod house at Inavale, Nebraska and passed away at his home in Yuma early Saturday morning, October 23, 1982, after a short illness. He had reached the age of 80 years, one month, and 29 days.

Vernie was united in marriage to Carrie Ester Thompson on May 28, 1921 at Sidney, Nebraska. To this union, three children were born, Cora Elizabeth Bates, Mildred Mae Baker, and Billy Joe Allen.

He moved to Colorado with his parents from Smith Center, Kansas in 1910 and homesteaded southwest of Eckley where he started his farming career in 1918.

In 1921 he moved with his wife to a farm north of Eckley where he farmed for five years. He then moved to a farm four miles north of Yuma and continued his farming for 15 years. In 1940 he moved to a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Yuma and continued his farming until his son, Billy Joe, returned from the service and assumed the responsibilities of the farm. In 1960 he moved into Yuma, where he was living at the time of his death. He continued assisting Billy Joe in the farming operation until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carrie; his daughter, Cora Elizabeth Bates; one sister, Millie Noble; and one brother, Wiley Allen.

He is survived by his daughter, Mildred Baker and husband Lee of Denver; son, Billy Joe Allen and wife, Rhonda, of Yuma: six grandchildren, Carolyn Bates Johnston and husband, Bob, of Denver, Elmer Edward Bates and wife, Joan, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Judy Godsey Owens of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Brendy Joe, Brett David and Breann Laine Allen of Yuma; seven great grandchildren, Beth Ann, Robbie and Louann Johnston of Denver, Kathy, Bonnie and Dana of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Mickey Ray Owens of Lee's Summit, Missouri; one brother, W.W. Jack Allen and wife, Ruth, of Yuma; one sister, Dovie Daniels of Fresno, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Interment was made in the Yuma Cemetery beside his wife.
