Charles A. Bernhardt was born in New York but grew up in Maywood, Illinois. He was inducted into the Army in December 1941, and trained at Camp Grant, Illinois. After training, he became a member of the 34th Infantry Division and fought in North Africa and Italy. He was Killed in Action in Italy.
After the war, his family had his remains returned home.
