Mr. Paul Arthur Alexander, 86, of Camp Airy, Thurmont, died Monday, Sept. 2, at St. Catherine's Nursing Home, Emmitsburg.
He was the husband of Dorothy Virginia Smith Alexander, whom he married Feb. 11, 1945.
Born Sept. 20, 1915, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Lank and Martha C. Zimmerman Alexander.
Mr. Alexander was a member of Weller United Methodist Church, Thurmont.
He was past commander and life member of Edwin Creeger Post 168 American Legion of Thurmont, and a member of the 40 & 8 Group of Maryland.
He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator at Fort Detrick for more than 32 years.
He was an avid gardener and loved to work in his yard.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ethel Brauer and husband Alan L. Sr., and Paulette Mathias and husband Dennis, all of Rocky Ridge; five grandchildren, Juliann Frantz and husband Rob, Jamison Mathias and wife Melissa, Andrew Mathias and Kelly Brauer, all of Rocky Ridge, and Alan L. Brauer Jr. of Smith Lake, N.M.; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Mathias and Gage Alan Frantz, both of Rocky Ridge; one brother, Steve Alexander of Thurmont; two sisters-in-law, Madeline Frushour of Rocky Ridge and Betty Eyler of Thurmont; and many nieces and nephews.
He will also be remembered by his grandson Andrew's friend Heather Whetzel, and granddaughter Kelly's friend Adam Nay.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Clarence Alexander, Charles Alexander, Myrtle Recard, Edith Andrews and Caroline Shriner.
Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 5 from 1 to 9 p.m. at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Weller's United Methodist Church, 101 N. Altamont Ave., Thurmont. Services will begin at 11 a.m. with his pastor, The Rev. Ruth Ann Miller, officiating.
Interment will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.
