The Passing of Mrs. Katherine Crawford, a Pioneer Mother of Texas
.
Mrs. Catherine Crawford (nee Keiningham), whose decease is announced in another column of this morning's News, was one of the notable women of her generation. She was born in Clay County, Kentucky, in 1818. At the age of 18 years she was married to J. D. Crawford in her native county. She was united with the Baptist Church the same year, 1837.
.
In December 1843, they emigrated to Texas and settled in what is now Cass County, thirty miles north of Jefferson, where her husband died, after the Civil War.
.
She was the mother of nine children, five sons and four daughters. Three of her children, one son and two daughters, died in infancy; one son was killed at the battle of Gaines Mills, Va., and two were wounded. Only three sons survive her, the firm of Crawford & Crawford, Dallas and J. D. Crawford of Marshall.
.
Mrs. Crawford's two daughters - Mrs. W. T. Atkins of Jefferson and Mrs. Epperson of Clarksville - died some years since.
.
Since then she has resided with her son, Judge M. L. Crawford, of this city.
.
Few women have been endowed with the intellectual vigor and force of character of Mrs. Crawford. Her whole being was concentrated in her children. Although a widow for many years, she directed her household with rare judgment and succeeded in shaping the domestic welfare of her children with the foresight and solicitude which only a true woman and loving mother can command.
.
The decease was more the result of old age than of disease and her departure was serene and composed as that of one who lies down to pleasant dreams.
