Frances (Sing) Haven Hughes was my paternal Step-Grandmother, the second wife of Henry A. Haven. They lived near the roller-skating rink in Coldwater, MS. The family also included Mary (appx. age 12), Ronald Wayne (3), and the twins: Allen (6 mo.), and Virginia "Ann"(6 mo.).

My Grandfather died in his 50's, but had asked my Dad to take care of the family as his dying wish. Dad converted part of our house to a duplex, and when I was between the 5th and 6th grades, the family came to live with us on Woolsey Road in Olive Branch, MS. Frances' Mother, Mrs. Sing, also lived there.

Frances was tall, had natural red hair, lots of freckles, and beautiful blue eyes. She was a hard-working, very kind-hearted lady. She drove a school bus for DeSoto County, and sometimes people thought she was my Mother since I was on the bus with her first, and because I have red hair, freckles, and am light-complexioned. (My Mother is Nell Haven.)

Frances was an excellent Christian Mother, and a very considerate daughter and sister. She loved people. When she was able to afford it, she moved to a nearby rental house. Later, she married a Hughes and lived in the Byhalia area.

Not only did she experience the heart-break of losing her first husband, but she suddenly lost two of her four children - Ronald and Ann. Ronald died in 1983. Ann died in 1996. In between those two deaths, if I'm remembering correctly, she lost her second husband in a farm tractor accident.

After Ann died, Mary had to make some tough decisions. She took charge and saw that Frances got the care that she needed.

We miss you, Frances!
