He was the son of Spence Atwell Shepherd and Martha (Mattie) Jeanette Reid. He served in the US Army in the Philippines. He then worked as dining car conductor and inspector on the Chicago, Great Western Railroad for about 20 years. He returned to Greene County, Ohio in 1927 and became a farmer. He married Edna (Mae) Spahr Graham on 16 April 1931. She was the widow of Elmer Hiram Graham.
