Henry Elkana "Cain" Miller was born ca 1831 in Lincoln Co, NC (the portion which later became Catawba Co). When his parents moved to Gilmer Co, GA, he was apprenticed to Robert Helton to become a blacksmith, and did not move to Georgia. In 1850 census for Catawba Co, Elkana Miller was living in the household of Robert Helton.

In about 1853, he married Sarah C. Abernethy, daughter of David & Sarah Catherine Abernethy. Sarah Abernethy Miller is buried in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. The 1860 census for Catawba Co, Jacobs Fork Township, lists the family as:
H. E. Miller, 29
Sarah C. (Whisenhunt [sic]; should be Abernathy), 23
David (Reuben), age 5
Catherine (Missouri), age 3
John (sic) (Leander Henry), age 1
A fourth child, Mary Susan Miller, was born in Oct 1860.

On Mar 1, 1862, Henry Elkana Miller enlisted in Co. F, 23rd Regiment, NC Troops, CSA, known as the "Catawba Guards". The 23rd Regiment was moved from Manassas, Virginia to the area of the Yorktown-Warwick line on the Peninsula below Williamsburg, VA. On Mar 20, Elkana was moved to a Confederate Hospital in Virginia, where he died on either March 31 or April 1, 1862, and was buried in a Cemetery for Confederate soldiers.

Sarah Abernethy Miller died in the early 1860s, and the four Miller children were raised by family members. In 1870, Reuben, 15, was in the household of his great uncle & aunt, Ephraim & Sarah Whisenhunt. Missouri, age 14, was living with her grandmother, "Caty" (Whisenhunt) Abernathy and her aunt, Eve Abernathy. Mary was living with Eli & Sarah (Whisenhunt) Whitener. Leander "Lee" was living with Miller relatives (descendants of Henry & Sarah Wilfong Miller) in Burke Co, NC, and was working on the farm of Powell Ward in the summer of 1870.

In July 1862, Noah A. Abernethy (brother of Sarah Abernethy Miller) was appointed Administrator of the estate of Henry E. Miller. Reuben Yoder was appointed Guardian of the minor heirs of Elkana Miller in 1862. Catawba Co Deed 28:416 (sic), dated 1870, divides the land of Henry Elkana Miller among his four children, Reuben, Levi H., Missouri (Miller) Whitener, and Mary (Miller) Lail.

1. David Reuben Miller, born 1855, Catawba Co, NC. He married Mary Olivia Mooney (d/o Daniel & Sarah E. Mooney) on Mar 3, 1878, in Burke Co, NC. In 1880 census, D. R. Miller, blacksmith, 26, & his wife, Mary Olivia, 30, are living with her parents. The family moved to Colorado in 1887 and may have later moved to Oklahoma.

ii. Catherine Missouri Miller, born 1857, Catawba Co, NC. She married Peter Andrew Whitener (s/o Abel & Margaret Plantina Abernethy Whitener), on Sep 26, 1878 in Catawba Co, NC. Their son, Abel Pinckney Whitener, was born Mar 28, 1879; died Aug, 1949. Catherine Missouri Miller Whitener died in childbirth on June 25, 1881; she and baby Mary Whitener, were buried together at Zion Lutheran.

iii. Leander Henry Miller, born 1859, Catawba Co, NC. He married Ann E. Pool (d/o James Nelson & Nancy Parks Pool) on Mar 18, 1880 in Burke Co, NC. They are listed in the 1880 census of Morganton Township, Burke Co, NC.

iv. Mary Susan Miller, born Oct 12, 1860. She married Ransom C. Lail (s/o Ransom Lail of Burke Co). They are buried at Zion Lutheran.

All of the above was compiled by Anne Williams McAllister ca 2007, & sent to a descendant (in Georgia) of Jacob & Polly Whitener Miller. Sources cited were:
