Martha was the biological daughter of Vanessa Williamson and Rufus Kirby. At three months of age, she was adopted by Mattie Kirby Meredith (Find A Grave Memorial# 84887777), sister of Rufus.

Martha was first married to Arthur James Keesler, and second to Joseph F. McKonly. She had one son, James Monroe "Jim" Keesler.
