HORTON----Melvin F. Coates, 85, of Horton, formerly of Netawaka, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 1994 at an Atchison hospital.

He was born Sept. 12, 1909 in Jewell County, Kansas, the son of Frank and Lydia Long Coates. He had lived in Horton for a year, having previously lived in Netawaka for 61 years. He also lived in Superior, Neb., for a year.

Mr. Coates worked as a carpenter in Topeka for 22 years. He also ran his own mechanic shop at his home in Netawaka for many years. He was a past member of the Superior Presbyterian Church in Superior, Neb.

He was married to Lennie F. Wofe on Feb. 8, 1932 in Holton. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Cummings of Walterboro, South Carolina, Janis Swain of Decater, Ala., and Beverly Trundle of Hiawatha; 17 grandchildren. He was Preceded in death by a daughter, June Hall, in August of 1993.

Services for Mr. Coates will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 2, 1994, at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
