Christena M. Abbott, 86, Pierre, died on January 12, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre.
Christena Schmitgen was born on March 3, 1926, to Anthony and Martha (Miles) Schmitgen in Onida. She grew up on the family farm in Sully County. When she was eighteen she moved to Pierre where she worked at the Liberty Café.
On June 1, 1946 she was united in marriage to Celmer Abbott. They farmed together east of Hayes until they moved to Pierre in 1967. To this union four children were born: Donna, Ruth, Grace and Ray. Celmer passed away in 1968. She continued to live in her home in Pierre until moving to Golden Living Center in October of 2009.
Christena was a devoted mother and grandmother, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking, baking and embroidery work.
She is survived by her children Grace (Charles) Fields and Ray Abbott; son-in-law Harold Blumhardt; her grandchildren, Lorna Robinson, Leon Blumhardt, Pierre, SD, Cheryl (Jeff) Hauck, Sioux Falls, SD, Karen Borrud, Pierre, SD and Misty (David) Oenema, Chilliwick, BC, Canada, her great grandchildren Maria and Tim Robinson, Kingston and Roman Oenema, and Nolan Borrud; one brother David Schmitgen, Irene, SD and one sister Vivian (Mardell)Burns, Spearfish, SD; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Celmer Abbott; daughters, Ruth Abbott and Donna Blumhardt; daughter-in-law Norma Abbott, her grandson Kelcey Abbott, her two sisters Iola Miller and Viola Miller, and one brother Leroy Schmitgen.
