Lucy Toland;
Toland, LUCY TUCKER, born September 17,1907, died Saturday morning, April 19th in Dallas. A descendant of a pioneer family that came to Texas while it was still a Republic, she was the fifth of six daughters born to Edna Corrine Bentley and John Franklin Tucker. The family lived on a farm in the small, East Texas town of Chireno where her father managed the mercantile store. Most evenings, at twilight, she remembered waiting at the gate of the lower pasture for her father to come home. He would reign in his horse, swing her up in front of him and together they would ride up the hill to the farmhouse. When he died several months before the birth of his sixth daughter, the family moved to Oak Cliff to be near relatives. Lucy and her younger sister, Johnnie, after graduating from Oak Cliff High School, both attended S.M.U. where in successive years they were voted Rotunda Beauties. Lucy was known for her quick wit, her wonderful sense of humor, her beauty and her insatiable curiosity. In 1931, she married Homer Lee Pendleton Toland, a Dallas boy who had attended Stanford University and graduated from The University of Texas. He worked as a publisher. Two boys, Stanley and Thomas and a girl, Lucy, were born in the years that followed. In 1949, on a day's outing at the lake, Homer Toland died of a heart attack. Widowed and the mother of three young children, Lucy Toland proved to be strong, resilient and resourceful. She learned to manage the family's finances, invested wisely and ensured that her children would be educated. She served as President of the Highland Park High School PTA and on the board of the Visiting Nurses Association. Friends enjoyed her company - inviting her to travel with them, to play bridge or poker and, in the earlier years, to play tennis or golf. She chose to be an optimist and to have an abundant life. Despite adversities, she considered herself lucky. She was an honorary member of the Dallas Woman's Club and the Dallas Garden Club; she belonged to Dallas Country Club, the Mary K. Craig Class and joined the Highland Park Methodist Church at the time of her marriage. After her sixtieth birthday, she passed the Texas real estate exam and sold residential properties for Lakeside Reality. From her mid- seventies till her late eighties, she looked forward to the days she worked at The Four Corners, a shop in the Anatole Hotel, which belonged to her dear friends, Margaret and Trammell Crow. She lived longer than her five sisters and many of her friends, she lived honorably and she could always be found by listening for the sound of laughter. She is survived by her children, Stanley Toland, Thomas Toland and Lucy Toland Murphy; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Toland, her son-in-law, L. Michael Murphy, her grandchildren, Thomas Lee Toland, Scott Toland, Edward Toland, Monica Toland, Ellen Toland, Thomas Toland, Jr., Laura Murphy, Tucker Murphy and her niece and nephews, the Willis and Ford families. A memorial service will be held May 3'rd at 2:30 p.m. at Cox Chapel, Highland Park United Methodist Church. Dignity Memorial Sparkman Hillcrest 7405 W. Northwest Hwy. Dallas (214) 363-5401
