JOHNSON CITY - Jacob "J.A." G'fellers, 99, of Asbury Center, died Wednesday at his home following an extended illness.

A native of Chuckey, Mr. G'fellers had lived most of his life in Johnson City.

He was a son of the late John A. and Mary Emily Broyles G'fellers.

Mr. G'fellers was a retired housing contractor.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. G'fellers was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Chuckey.

He was a member of the American Legion.

He was the widower of Clara Ruth Browning G'fellers, who died in 2002.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Joyce and Ernest Herrell of Nashville; three grandchildren: Linda Sweeney of Nashville, Keith Herrell of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marjo Mecke of Greeneville; six great-grandchildren: Patrick Sweeney, Shannon Sweeney, Nate Herrell, Carrie Herrell, Melissa Mecke, and Chris Mecke; and several nieces and nephews of Chuckey.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday in the West Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E Watauga Ave., Johnson City.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 1 o'clock in the West Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Bill Wells will officiate.

Interment will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ernest Herrell, Mike Sweeney, Keith Herrell, Patrick Sweeney, Nate Herrell, Chris Mecke and Phillip G'fellers.
