"Frank Harrell Jr, received his Uncle Sam letter on April 4, 1944, the day his daughter was born. He and Martha Raye already had a son, William (Bill). He left for Columbus, Ga to be sworn into the U.S. Navy in June, 1944 and was immediately shipped to Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
He was sent to Norfolk,, VA and assigned to an LST (Landing Ship Tank) which carried ammunition to the various Theatres of Operaion. He shipped to the Pacific and was assigned as Radar Operator and Paymaster. Once he was injuired when the LST and the Flagship lurched and threw him between them, breaking his ankle and left leg. After he recovered in Guam, he was sent to the Philippines for surgery to correct a hernia caused by the accident. His doctor was Italian and spoke no English, and they had difficulty understanding each other. He was honorably discharged in the summer of 1946. Four more children were born, and he had a successful career in Tifton in furniture ad insurance. "
