He prepared for college at the Dwight School in New York and took the Electrical Engineering course at Yale University's Sheffield Scientific School.
He was forced by respiratory illness to leave college in the winter term of his senior year but returned in the fall and passed his examinations.
He then began studying law at Columbia University but he was again forced to quit his studies due to illness.
In the early part of 1896 he went to Lakewood and from there to his father's country home at Cranston where he died from tuberculosis.
