Aretas Hulburt Bridgman, named for an older brother who died as an infant in 1822, was born in the Elisha Bridgman farmhouse on Chesterfield Road in Westhampton, Massachusetts. He attended the local one-room schoolhouse and Williston Seminary in Easthampton, Mass. For all of his adult life he engaged in farming in Westhampton, eventually buying a farm on South Road, which remained in the family until 1937. This farm has been called "Intervale Farm" for many years. Aretas was a lover of music and the leader of the church choir for several years. He was very active in church and town affairs. He died at the age of seventy-five years.
